Why the name Sao Miguel do Gostoso? The name has its origin in two legends. Firstly, there was a man who lived in the area called Mr. Manoel Gostoso who was known for laughing and joking with travelling salesmen. Due to his unique sense of humour he became known as Mr. Gostoso and later the town took the name Gostoso too. Secondly, on the 29th of September of 1899, Mr. Miguel Felix Martins inaugurated the first church in Gostoso in homage of the Saint Miguel of Arcanjo, which became the patron saint of Gostoso de Touros. When the town of Gostoso gained its political independence from the city of Touros, the local popualtion joined the two legends and renamed their town São Miguel do Gostoso (rather than São Miguel do Touros). Gostoso translates to Yummy or Delicious in English.
